Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery for Patients in Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, VA & throughout Hampton Roads

Arthroscopic knee surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that can be very effective for relieving the pain and swelling associated with a torn meniscus and other common knee injuries. Patients from Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, and other nearby Virginia areas who are interested in learning more about treatment options for knee pain can turn with confidence to the highly specialized orthopaedic experts at Tidewater Orthopaedics.

After obtaining a complete medical history, performing a physical examination, and ordering and reviewing imaging studies (such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans), a knee specialist at Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton Roads might recommend arthroscopic knee surgery to address:

  • A torn meniscus (knee cartilage)
  • Loose bodies within the knee joint
  • An inflamed synovium (knee joint lining)
  • Persistent knee pain that has not responded to conservative treatment (arthroscopy can be used for both diagnostic and treatment purposes)

While performing arthroscopic knee surgery, a surgeon is able to access the knee joint through small incisions using special surgical equipment. A tiny scope with a fiber optic light source and miniature camera is used to project highly detailed images of the interior of the knee structure onto a screen or monitor. Then, while viewing and evaluating the bones, cartilage, and ligaments of the knee, a surgeon can utilize pencil-sized surgical instruments, such as probes, shavers, and scissors, to repair torn cartilage, remove excess tissue, and perform other procedures.
