Joint Replacement Surgery

Joint Replacement Surgery for Patients from Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, VA & Elsewhere on the Peninsula

Joint replacement surgery is understandably a daunting prospect for many patients. Therefore, it’s important for a patient to choose a surgeon that he or she feels completely comfortable with. Patients throughout Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, and the surrounding Virginia communities continually entrust their care to “The Specialist Group” – Tidewater Orthopaedics. Founded in 1973, we are the largest independent orthopaedic practice on The Peninsula. Our complement of fellowship- and combat-trained orthopaedic surgeons includes four who focus almost exclusively on joint replacement patients. The knowledge, training, and expertise of these subspecialists – combined with the unique hospital setting in which they practice and their state-of-the-art physical therapy department – can truly make a joint replacement patient’s experience second to none.

At Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton and Williamsburg, VA, the types of joint replacement surgery we offer include:

  • Conventional shoulder replacement surgery – A surgeon replaces the bony surfaces of the shoulder joint with a specially reinforced polyethylene plastic socket, or glenoid, and a metal humeral head that is attached to a stem inserted in the upper arm.
  • Reverse total shoulder replacement surgery – This advanced procedure can effectively address a completely torn rotator cuff, or severe arthritis coupled with a rotator cuff tear.
  • Knee replacement surgery – A surgeon removes the damaged portions of a knee and then caps the bony surfaces within the knee joint with manmade prosthetic implants.
  • Hip replacement surgery, such as the “Jiffy Hip” procedure – While a patient lies on a specially designed table, a surgeon works through an incision on the front of the thigh to access the hip by extending the leg downward, which allows for the placement of an implant without muscle dissection.

The techniques used by our surgeons to perform joint replacement surgery continue to become more streamlined and precise through innovations like specialized operating tables and computer-assisted surgeries. Additionally, more durable implants constructed of highly cross-linked polyethylene are continually being developed and refined. As a result, many of today’s patients can expect their implants to last far longer than their counterparts of yesteryear, creating increased optimism for both surgeons and their patients.
