Spine surgery can address spinal deterioration and damage that commonly results from age-related degeneration and spinal trauma. At Tidewater Orthopaedics, a specialty practice serving the entire Hampton, Williamsburg, and Newport News, Virginia, region, we offer a full range of surgical and non-surgical options for treating low back pain and other symptoms.
While spine surgery can be very effective in certain cases, the subspecialists at Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton Roads do not believe it is advisable for every patient. Likewise, even when it is an option, surgical intervention is rarely the first treatment that we recommend for patients who are diagnosed with degenerative spine conditions, such as:
Instead, we treat spinal conditions conservatively, with medication and exercise, and utilize our outstanding, in-house physical therapy program whenever appropriate. If a patient’s pain persists or worsens after several weeks or months of this type of conservative treatment, our fellowship-trained spine surgeon(American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons), Dr. Jonathan Mason, might then advise the patient to consider spine surgery. Dr. Mason performs a number of advanced, minimally invasive and traditional techniques, including spinal fusion, disc replacement, microdiscectomy, arthroplasty, laminoplasty, and kyphoplasty. The specific surgical approach recommended will depend on the patient’s unique needs.
Whether it is accomplished through conservative treatments or spine surgery, the ultimate goal of every physician at Tidewater Orthopaedics is to enhance our patients’ quality of life. Our highly specialized team takes tremendous satisfaction in seeing a patient transition from passively observing life from the sidelines to participating fully and actively.
