Amanda Miller, certified athletic trainer at Jamestown High School, has been named the regional nominee for The 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. As the regional nominee, Miller will advance on to join other regional nominees from across the nation to be considered The 2018 Newell Award National Athletic Trainer of the Year, which will be announced in the spring of 2018.

In partnership with Tidewater Orthopaedics and other orthopaedic practices nationwide, The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. Based on examples of service, leadership and shared experiences from community members, nominees for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award are chosen regionally. Miller’s regional nomination for the National Award is affirmed by the multitude of community members’ shared experiences submitted in support of her nomination.

“The outpouring of support from community members on Mrs. Miller’s behalf has been tremendous and certainly well-deserved,” says Dr. Loel Payne, sports medicine surgeon with Tidewater Orthopaedics. “We feel honored to acknowledge her efforts by partnering with The Newell Award to recognize the region’s top athletic trainers for the service and leadership they display while treating our community athletes.”

A certified local athletic trainer for the community and Jamestown High School, Miller received her bachelor of science degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic training and psychology from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut. She has been extremely involved in the athletic training community for nearly two decades, caring for injured athletes, teaching emergency medical technician students and educating future athletic trainers through her work.

In addition to Miller, there were several other exceptional candidates considered for regional nomination for The 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, including Amy Annette of Hampton Roads Academy, Michelle Priest of Poquoson High School and Mark Wolfe of Grafton High School. 

“The testimonials received on behalf of all the candidates demonstrate how fortunate we are at Tidewater Orthopaedics to work with such an incredible group of medical professionals,” continues Dr. Payne. “It is also a reminder to our communities how lucky we are to have them on the sidelines for our student athletes.”
