Robert C. Mason, M.D.

Shoulder, Elbow, Hand & Wrist

Dr. Robert Mason is an orthopaedic surgeon at Tidewater Orthopaedics and has been with the practice since 2018. He is fellowship‑trained by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hand and upper extremity surgery and provides comprehensive care for conditions ranging from the shoulder to the hand. Dr. Mason sees patients at both the Hampton and Suffolk locations.

Dr. Mason was drawn to orthopaedic surgery for its combination of precision, problem‑solving, and the opportunity to help patients return to the activities they enjoy. Through his own interests in carpentry and home improvement, he appreciates how meaningful it is to reclaim hobbies and daily activities that bring purpose and fulfillment. This perspective shapes his patient‑centered approach, as he works closely with individuals to develop personalized treatment plans focused on restoring function, supporting recovery, and improving quality of life.

Originally from Malone, New York, Dr. Mason began his academic career at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. He initially worked in the manufacturing industry before returning to Clarkson to earn a master’s degree in Engineering and Global Operations Management. Through his wife’s career as a nurse, Dr. Mason was introduced to the medical field and realized his passion for patient care, ultimately deciding to pursue medicine.

Dr. Mason earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, followed by an additional year of advanced fellowship training in upper extremity surgery—shoulder to hand—at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston‑Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Mason lives in Poquoson, Virginia with his wife, their two children, and their huskies. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, whether at the beach, watching movies, or playing and watching sports. His hobbies include basketball, football, baseball, golf, fishing, and tackling various home improvement projects.
