Bunion Surgery

Bunion Surgery for Patients in Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, VA & throughout the Peninsula

Bunion surgery may become necessary if conservative treatments prove to be ineffective for relieving the discomfort associated with a bunion or helping a patient get back to his or her regular activities without experiencing foot pain. Patients in Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, and the surrounding Virginia areas who are interested in exploring bunion surgery and other treatment options are welcome to consult with Dr. Paul Maloof, the foot and ankle specialist at Tidewater Orthopaedics.

A bunion is a condition that affects the bone that joins the big toe with the first metatarsal of the foot. Instead of pointing forward, the big toe unnaturally points outward, causing the bone to form a pronounced bump, or bunion, along the inner border of the foot. Because a bunion is not problematic in and of itself, corrective bunion surgery is generally considered only if the bump causes debilitating pain. In many cases, mild-to-moderate problems caused by this mound of excess bone and soft tissue can be managed sufficiently with non-surgical approaches, such as taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and wearing proper footwear.

During a personal consultation at Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton or Williamsburg, VA, Dr. Maloof can evaluate a patient’s foot and determine whether bunion surgery is appropriate. For instance, some of the problems that can be addressed with bunion surgery include:

  • Severe foot pain that limits a patient’s ability to engage in daily activities, such as walking and wearing shoes
  • Chronic inflammation and swelling of the big toe that doesn’t improve with rest or medication
  • A drifting of the big toe toward the small toes that results in foot deformity
  • An inability to bend or straighten the big toe

Bunion surgery can often provide dramatic pain reduction as well as a significant improvement in the alignment of the big toe. However, it’s important to note that the goal of surgery is pain relief, and not cosmetic improvement. It is not intended to – nor can it – create a “perfect foot.”

At Tidewater Orthopaedics, we pride ourselves on offering highly individualized bunion surgery and other treatments. Our goal is to return each patient to a full, active, and healthy lifestyle.
