***After your joint replacement -elective dental cleanings and procedures should be scheduled 6 months past your surgery date – for emergencies have the physician follow the guidelines provided below-
From the date of surgery and for the remainder of your life for routine teeth cleaning only (Cleaning and Scaling procedures):
Keflex or Amoxicillin 1 gram by mouth one hour before the procedure If you cannot take it by mouth: Ancef 1 gram or 2 grams Ampicillin IM or IV one hour before the procedure.
If you are allergic to Penicillin or Keflex;
Cleocin 600mg by mouth one hour before the procedure. If you cannot take it by mouth then: Cleocin 600mg IM or IV before the procedure.
From the date of surgery and for the remainder of your life for all invasive procedures:
Certain types of procedures, surgeries, and for prophylaxis for example: dental fillings, extractions, root canals, periodontal work, D&C, colonoscopy, endoscopy, cataract surgery, IVP, heart catheter, or anytime bleeding is possible with a procedure, prophylactic antibiotics are a must!!
If you are having surgery you will most likely receive IV antibiotics at the time of surgery. Discuss this with the surgeon doing the surgery.
Bacterial Infections:
If you think that you have a bacterial infection for example a sinus infection, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, etc… you will need to be on an antibiotic. Consult with your Medical Doctor. This will be the case for the rest of your life whenever there is an active infection occurring in your body.
Keep this sheet handy as a reference. The success of your new joint depends upon it.
