John Hunter Matthews M.D.

Dr. J. Hunter Matthews is a highly skilled orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction. His journey in medicine began at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Wake Forest University Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Further, he honed his expertise with a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. 

Dr. Matthews has received numerous accolades throughout his academic and professional career, including the prestigious Gold Humanism in Medicine Award and the Walton W. Curl Clinical and Surgical Excellence Award. His fellowship at Emory provided extensive training in robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and revision surgeries, positioning him at the forefront of surgical innovation. 

A committed researcher, Dr. Matthews has contributed to multiple publications focusing on total joint replacement and advanced surgical techniques. His work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals and medical textbooks and presented at national conferences. 

Dr. Matthews is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. His dedication to continuous learning and professional development ensures that his patients receive the highest standard of care. 

Dr. Matthews is deeply involved in his community outside his medical practice. He volunteers in free medical clinics, provides medical coverage for high school sports, and teaches in STEM programs. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, running with his dog, Murphy, and spending time with family and friends.
